Nowhere Man
but used to be big in business

OK, these days I tend to feel that I’m in a pretty small minority. I’m an old fashioned sort of bloke and I like knob gags and bum jokes, so I fell about when I saw this ad for Dr Pepper. I have to admit it cheered me up a bit, if a big brand like Dr P is using this sort of stuff then there must still be a market out there for this retro schtick.
I had thought that this sort of knob based, double entendre was completely unacceptable in the US. I know that they do it in films, but I thought they couldn’t go anywhere near it in ads, but here we are with a full-on, carry-on knob gag ad thing.
To be honest I don’t know whether this ad is running in the UK, but it doesn’t really matter it’s still a fucking riot. Childish, puerile (have I spelt this right?) it may be, but I love it. It has a kind of arse and bravado that we don’t often see in the UK. We think that we’ll win gongs at the ad awards by being arty and obscure, but the yanks can still make us laugh by being direct, smutty and vulgar. The strategy in the States is based on the idea that people don’t really like Dr Pepper, or are nervous about trying it, (how weedy is that?) but the ad makes the very best of this slightly awkward proposition, and gave me a few smutty laughs.
