"hi, i beleive.."

"What has happened.."

Mrs E Rigby
the voice of common sense

You know that place where they set all the adverts these days? It’s always sunny but it looks sort of funny, not quite right, if you know what I mean. Sometimes they try to pretend that the advert is happening in this country but it doesn’t really work, on account of the sunshine, and you end up not really knowing where you are.
Val, who I do my focus group with, says it is mostly actually South Africa or South America, because it’s sunny in the winter down there and also it’s loads cheaper to make adverts. Well, I think they’ve gone a bit far with this one – you’d never believe that it was taking place in this country, apart from all the sunshine there’s palm trees waving around at the bottom of the garden which you don’t see much round our way. The family look quite English, in fact the mum looks a bit like that Kate Winslett. She’s a lovely actress and to be honest I’ve always thought you’d be more likely to find her behind the counter at Coombes the baker than walking up the red carpet at a film premier so maybe that’s why they used this actress.
But when it comes to the acting, none of the family do it very well in my opinion, and I think the elephant gives much the best performance. I particularly like it when he kicks the dustbin over when he doesn’t get to suck up the young lad’s ice cream.
I know that they’re trying to say that Lotus towels suck up things like an elephant, but what they’re really saying is, get some Lotus towels in quick, or you’ll have elephants in your garden, which is a different point isn’t it? We didn’t get this advert in our focus group, but if we had, I’m sure we could have helped sort it out for them. I think we’d have told them to get rid of the palm trees too.

Rather contrived?

Or fun and effective?
