Dr. Robert
he's always on the case

This is a charming advert for Lotto, another in their ‘go for it’ campaign. I think they had one featuring a fearless couple plunging into icy waves, and now we’ve got three old blokes who break into a football stadium for an after-hours kick about.
As I said, I liked it and it makes its point but I wonder if it will survive?
After all, what we are witnessing could be described as breaking and entering which is surely an absolute no-no when it comes to ads. Will it, I wonder result in a flood of complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority? "Surely we cannot condone the showing of criminal behaviour in advertising, etc etc” you know the kind of thing. It may sound foolish, but it’s just the sort of nonsense that can and does happen. Though, unofficially I have been told that sometimes these letters of complaint are actually written by competitors trying to queer their rival’s pitch- how cute is that?
Personally I think that they’ll get away with this one because the chaps are old. It is becoming clear that one of the few advantages of old age and apparent senility in our present society is that you can get away with almost anything. This attitude may seem a trifle patronising, but if I were an old codger I wouldn’t worry about that and would milk it for all it’s worth. Just smile vacantly and carry on with whatever you’re doing, they probably won’t have the nerve to stop you – unless of course, you have the misfortune to already be in an old peoples home.
