Nowhere Man
but used to be big in business

I am much in favour of creative teams being able to whiz off to exotic locations to make their commercials. I have personally done quite a lot of gadding about over the years and can only regret that I am not involved in the current HSBC advertising.
‘The world’s local bank’ is as close as you can get to an open ticket when it comes to foreign jollies, and they have produced a number of ads set in a wide variety of exotic locations.
I am of course glad that the team have not muffed this globe trotting opportunity, but as far as I can recall, none of the ads have made much sense or told me anything useful or interesting about the HSBC. This seems a bit unfair, after all, they’re picking up the tab for your five star hotel, not to mention your visits to establishments specialising in ‘sophisticated gentlemen’s entertainment’ often, though not exclusively involving the inappropriate use of ping pong balls, so the least you could do is come back with an ad that helps them along a bit, you know what I’m saying?
Well, I’m happy to announce that this ad, set in that amazing part of China where everyone seems to end up with the whacky mountains, actually makes a bit of sense and does tell me something useful about HSBC, which is a bit of a breakthrough, so well done to the team. As to whether it represents an ongoing trend for HSBC or is merely a flash in the pan- we’ll just have to wait and see.
