The Fool on the Hill
sees the world going round

I flew Turkish Airlines once to a wedding in Istanbul and it certainly felt, and indeed smelt like a different sort of airline. It was about 12 years ago and though not totally banned on aircraft, the authorities were making vigorous and in the main successful efforts to get airlines to discourage smoking on board. Turkish Airlines as I recall, weren’t having any of this. The aircraft, as you got on, smelt like an upmarket tobacconists, and it was the non smokers who were corralled into a few rows at the rear end of the aircraft in a direct inversion of the normal practise. We flew off to Istanbul in a strangely comforting fug of fragrant Turkish tobacco.
Obviously those days are over, and I imagine Turkish Airlines is now much like any other airline, hence this quite amiable and reasonably effective effort to make you think that Turkish Airlines are a bit special, despite the lack of any any proper evidence to that effect.
The star who you are made to feel like is, I think, called Kevin Costner, a gentleman who has had rather an erratic career. He is a global star, and is no doubt rather full of himself, perhaps because of this he has been allowed to make some bad calls over the years and his judgement can only be seen as suspect.
Waterworld, still one of the most expensive turkeys ever created, plus a mawkishly sentimental piece of cod patriotics with the catchy title of The Postman, and the jury is still out on the somewhat overblown ‘Dancing with Wolves.’
All things considered, his decision to ‘star’ in this commercial for Turkish Airlines could be seen as one of his better career moves. It’s a clever and nicely made commercial and it won’t do either Kevin or Turkish Airlines any harm at all.
