Dr. Robert
he's always on the case

I've seen this ad before, when we had a flu panic last year and I suppose it makes sense to have a ready made ad about the perils of sneezing, so that you can roll it out whenever the next flu pandemic comes along. Set in a lift, which seems to be the general default location for people coming into close proximity with one another, it makes its point reasonably enough. It has been updated with a very simple message at the end about swine flu would seem an understandable and sensible response to the present threat.
There is however another view that I have heard expressed by some eminent people who know about these things. The fact is, that this current version of the virus is proving less dangerous than was at first thought, and they say that it might be a good idea for us to have a dose of this one, before it mutates, as it probably will, into something a lot more unpleasant.
In simple terms, catch it if you can now, you may well suffer a few days of discomfort, but will probably have developed immunity to the much more serious version which they think may emerge towards the end of the year. I am not a virologist, but I see some sense in what they say. I'm not suggesting that we should all rush out and snuggle up to sneezers in lifts or have swine flu parties, but personally at the moment I am taking a relaxed attitude to this particular pandemic. I can only hope that what they say is right.
