Dr. Robert
he's always on the case

There were originally two Kellogg brothers involved in the cereal business, one of them was a bit mad and the other was a bit sharp. I think this ad features a computer generated version of William, the sharp one. As I recall, the mad one invented the Corn Flake process at the end of the 19th century and then set about trying to encourage people to eat them as a way of suppressing what he saw as their disgusting sexual appetites.
Whether Corn Flakes are a sexual suppressant is not something I can comment on, though it seems unlikely, but poor mad John Kellogg was so carried away by his desire to smite smut with Corn Flakes that he happily handed out the recipe to anyone who was interested.
This included the visitors to his sanatorium, who one supposes were all wrestling with their overactive libidos. One of them however, CW Post by name, seemed less interested in curbing his libido and more interested in lining his pocket. Whether cured of his lascivious thoughts or not, he went off and started the first great breakfast cereal company, much to the annoyance of William Kellogg.
William soon set up his own company, sensibly abandoned all claims that eating his Corn Flakes could reduce sexual desire, and after being so comprehensively ripped off by Mr Post I'm sure he wanted to ensure proper ownership of his Corn Flakes and would probably have signed every one in person if he could. It would seem therefore that his signature on the packs was not so much a mark of quality, but more an attempt to protect patents and prevent the Posts of this world from muscling in on this amazingly lucrative market.
