Dr. Robert
he's always on the case

Going on a cruise; it used to be recommended by doctors who had rich elderly patients who seemed to suffer from endless mysterious ailments. I suspect that this was not so much for the health of the patient as for the sanity of the doctor, but the bracing qualities of a cruise might be beneficial.
Nowadays these cruise ships are not so much boats, as vast floating hotels, and their bracing qualities have I suspect all but vanished. They have gyms, and some of them even, I understand, rock climbing facilities, they have endless opportunities for activities on board, but I suspect that the most active most people get, is when they shoulder their way around the, all-you-can-eat buffet at one of the many `sophisticated international standard' restaurants on board.
P&O try and make their cruises look a little bit different and adventurous, but from what I've heard cruises are amongst the least adventurous holidays you can pick. Everything is organised and wrapped up for you. Your visits to exotic locations are carefully monitored, you are whisked in and whisked out, with very little chance of an adventure of any kind. This all pervading atmosphere of contol, molly-coddling and a lingering whiff of bath chairs would, I reckon make it difficult to recruit younger or even slightly more adventurous people to the safe and predictable world of cruising, but you can't blame P&O for trying.
That might all change very suddenly, of course. I have heard from someone in the shipbuilding business that one or two of these new floating palaces are rather top heavy and potentially unstable. There is a chance, he says, that the right sort of wave could actually tip one over - now that would really be an awfully big adventure wouldn't it?

Or an attractive pitch?
