The Fool on the Hill
sees the world going round

It is an odd one this, the passion that the British can show for a humble chocolate bar or even a biscuit. I've seen grown men almost come to blows over the merits or demerits of Gipsy Creams or Jaspers, but the full power of this feeling is mainly expressed in terms of chocolate bars. The mere mention of Cadburys Curlywurly can send people into a frenzy of nostalgia. Huge and passionate debates take place, as the still available Twix and Kitkat go head to head.
If I remember correctly, with regard to Wispa, Cadburys have toyed with this national characteristic to great effect in the past. For some reason they stop making Wispas, wait for the uproar to develop, let it boil up nicely and then bring them back again with a flourish. Hurrah, everyone loves Cadburys, and everyone loves Wispa. I think they have done this several times before, and whether or not Wispa was originally anything like an iconic chocolate bar, it most certainly is now.
So cynical as it may be, this ploy has proved quite successful, and the current commercial gives living, vibrant proof of the depth of feeling that exists about Wispa. It gives the impression that it has been put together by hoards of Wispa fans who have offered their time and their whacky costumes to the great cause of getting their favourite chocolate bar back on the shelves. It's big and bold and brassy and it looks like everyone had a ball. And it's a very cute idea - very much the sort of thing that clients are looking for in our 360 degree media landscape- or so I am told.
However, in the grand scheme of things, I wonder whether this level of interest in a bar of chocolate is entirely healthy in grown up people. We shall see.

Noisy but dull?
