"Notice that later.."

Nowhere Man
but used to be big in business

It used to be easy in the old days, some clients did really rubbish ads, and other ones did decent ads. You knew where you were, you avoided clients like Proctor and Gamble, Nestle, J&J and Mars. It was easy enough, they mostly congregated in agencies that you didn't want to work for anyway. Also, it was great because all those rubbish ads made the ones that you were doing look pretty good by comparison, and you always knew that when you ran out of road at your decent agency you could still earn a crust by shovelling shit at one of the no hopers.
Well it all started to go wrong about ten or fifteen years ago. Some of the duffer clients started doing good ads, which was a bit of a bummer to be honest. Since then things have gone from bad to worse, and these days even the most reliably cack handed clients are coming up with ads that don't actually make you cringe.
This Bold ad, for example is perfectly OK, nothing wrong with it, but you used to be able to rely on Proctor and Gamble to produce complete turkeys for stuff like Bold. In fact it was in the soap powder world where this divide was most apparent. Persil used to do half decent ads and you could count on Daz and Bold to come up with terrible old clunkers. I've heard that the boys up at P&G were driven mad by this. They knew their stuff was better than Persil, but people kept buying Persil because they said they liked the ads.
It seems they finally got the message, and I suppose I should be pleased, but quite frankly I don't know where I stand anymore, what with the wrong people doing half decent ads. In fact the only people who still seem to be dedicated to producing proper rubbish these days are Cillit Bang (though that may be ironic) and those Vanish and Finish people. But hey, that's progress, I suppose.

Or the same as it ever was?
