Quite a big change of direction here from Stella. This new Stella `4' indicates that they have reduced the alcohol content from a head banging 5.2% in the standard product to a more politically correct and less lethal 4%. Perhaps because of this, they feel able to adopt a less elliptical approach to their advertising. None of the quirky black and white art house style mini movies or historical epics that are so at variance with the actuality of the original Stella's role as the nations rocket fuel of choice. For Stella '4' we have a more straightforward type of beer advertising, all emphasising the proposition, which is apparently a smooth outcome.
It's laddish and cool, and quite old fashioned in it's way, indeed it seems to be set in France sometime in the 50s or early 60s, judging by the cars and bathing suits. I don't quite know why this should be, but I do agree that the French had a certain `je ne sais quoi' at this time, what with the "nouvelle vague' and Brigitte Bardot and Alain Delon all gliding around in iconic Citroen DS's. I notice that the posters also have a retro feel to them, so I suppose they are trying to give a bit of pedigree and heritage to a beer that has actually been brewed up in a focus group by the marketing department.
In fact they more or less get away with it, apart from a clumsy moment when the hero, who seems to speak otherwise perfect French, asks for "Un Stella `four', s'il vous plait." I imagine that they might have considered having him ask more realistically, for a `Stella quatre' but with the state of foreign language knowledge as it is, even amongst MPs, felt that they couldn't risk people missing their lovely, and highly responsible, product point.

Or cool retro chic?
