Have we become so confused about the way we treat our children that a self serving message from Persil can present itself quite convincingly as a long lost piece of common sense?
It is, of course, made with some skill, if it does tap into some kind of unease about the way we treat our children, and if it is an effective way to sell Persil then I can only congratulate the creators of the ad. What it says about the views of the society in which we now live is almost too painful to contemplate.
I can only take comfort in the fact that what people read in the newspapers and what they tell us in focus groups are not in any way a true reflection of what they actually think or how they behave. The current crisis about our children, whether they be feral or overprotected may be more imaginary than actual. I suspect that most people are just getting on with raising their children, much as they have done, despite the best efforts of the press, the government and the legal profession.
