Dr. Robert
he's always on the case

This is a well made but rather tentative advert for Army recruitment. Quite understandable I suppose, the whole issue of Army recruitment advertising must be incredibly sensitive at present. The Army are having to fight a dangerous, controversial and fairly unpopular war, and are suffering casualties, so I imagine that any attempts to get people to join up could, in these litigious times, be open to legal challenges.
The situation in Afghanistan in particular is certainly not helped by the incomprehensible policy of trying to destroy the opium crop. This deprives the local people of their livelihood, sets them against our troops, and drives them into the arms of the Taliban. So far, so not good.
The fact is, the world needs morphine, there is actually a shortage in some areas, and the Afghans could supply a lot of the raw material. All we have to do is buy the crop from them, and use it to make morphine.
This has nothing but beneficial effects. The locals are happy, a lot of heat goes out of the situation, the Army can get on with the job, the Taliban are sidelined, and the opium crop is taken off the black market, so there's less heroin on the streets and more morphine in hospitals for those who really need it.
Can anyone tell me why we are not already doing this? Until we finally see sense, the situation in Afghanistan will remain as dangerous and unpleasant for our troops as it is now, and Army recruitment will no doubt remain a difficult business too.
