Dr. Robert
he's always on the case

Popcorn is the musical equivalent of one of these new smart viruses like Sars or bird flu that now apparently threaten our world. It is highly infectious, long lasting, capable of endless mutation, while maintaining its basic structure, keeps cropping up where you least expect it, and of course there is at present no known cure. I hadn't been aware of Popcorn for a while, apart from the fact that it occasionally pops up, unbidden in my head. I was part of the original pandemic which first took off in 1972, and I remain infected.
This ad for Budweiser uses Popcorn and is a classic in their ongoing series of quirky ads that sort of make no sense but for some reason are engaging. I really don't know what it's all about, but I watched it several times with some pleasure. Whether it will encourage me to rush out and purchase some Budweiser seems unlikely, but I like the ad and I end up well disposed towards the beer. It is kind of like one of those random encounters in a pub. It has no discernable logic, but seems `like a good idea at the time.'
Budweiser normally appear able to get this right, they don't seem to have any broad recognisable strategy but just an understanding of beer and blokes. And that is probably all you really need, especially when you're pushing a beer that has no distinctive provenance or identifiable qualities. Originally of American origin, it has nothing to do with Czech Bud, and it's made in big beer factories all over the world from God knows what. In fact probably the best thing about it is the advertising.
