Dr. Robert
he's always on the case

The national characteristics of cars - I'm sure people have produced learned papers on this subject, but I can't say I've read them. My rule of thumb goes like this. German, dull but well made, French, erratic but exciting, Italian, elegant but rusty, Japanese, reliable but characterless and British, when we had a motor industry, spivvy and unreliable. You will of course notice that the British managed to produce cars that combined two negatives, as opposed to the more balanced products of our competitors and that is no doubt why we no longer have a motor industry.
Obviously Citroen are trying to pull off a double positive here. A car that embodies the good features of German and French manufacturers, in this case well made and exciting. It is I agree, quite a proposition, despite the fact that German cars are now not really quite what they were.
But what if it went the other way? Could Citroen have actually produced a car in the British mould, with the deadly double negative? A car that combines the worst of the French and German traditions and is both dull and erratic. I have to say that the ad doesn't really give me any reassurance on this point. The German driver does look somewhat dull, and his behaviour could certainly be described as erratic, I really don't get anything that talks to me about exciting and well made. If I get round to taking one for a test drive I'll let you know where the Citroen C5 has actually ended up.
