Short of actually using a large fig leaf, I cannot think of a better way to demonstrate the sad truth about these noisy initiatives. Does the ad represent some instinctive desire by Npower to confess to the pointless and superficial nature of their offer? Or is it just a thoughtless own goal? Either way, it's a remarkably accurate picture of what is going on. I don't even know what exactly is the nature of their environmental initiative but I suspect it adds up to no more than a splash of green paint.
The sad truth is that any serious environmental measures by energy companies will take commitment, vision and long term investment. Whether Npower can offer any of these is extremely doubtful.
Like many of our service companies, British Airports Authority, and Powergen included, Npower Uk is now the property of some foreign conglomerate. These are now mostly concerned with trying to manage the massive burdens of debt that they have run up in the process of buying Npower and the like.
I suspect that they have neither the time, the money or the inclination to apply themselves seriously to the businesses they own. At best we can expect a bit more green paint, and at worst the power station equivalent of terminal 5. Isn't that a cheery thought?
