"The advert for.."

The Fool on the Hill
sees the world going round

From what I can see, an interesting development is taking place in our armed forces which could have some quite important implications for our social services.
This ad is quite compelling and is no doubt truthful, as the poor woman from the Balkans tells how she was saved by the intervention of the British Army. Over the years army recruitment advertising has been moving away from the gung ho, `foreign travel and killing people' position, and this ad completes that process of transition. It could easily be an ad for a career in the social services, picking up the pieces, trying to help people get back on their feet, and all that sort of thing. In fact it seems that the army's intervention in the Balkans at least, has been pretty successful, which is more than can be said for many of those carried out the social services.
Now the right idea is not to turn the Army into the social services, but rather to turn the social services into the Army. If we were to arm social workers, and give them proper military training we might begin to see much more effective interventions on the domestic front. When you are confronted with a platoon of fully armed, flack jacketed social workers kicking your door in, you're not going to argue about child maintenance or visiting rights or not going to your anger management counselling are you? No sir, you are going to show these good people a considerable amount of respect and do exactly what they say in double quick time.
Quite apart from increasing the effectiveness of the social services, this would cheer up the social workers themselves. I can imagine disciplined platoons of them marching out of the DHSS , heads held high, the object not of scorn, but of admiring glances from children who just can't wait until they're old enough to join the social services themselves.
