Nowhere Man
but used to be big in business

The latest in along series of Halifax ads, in which they seem to be trying to find a member of staff who can finally take over the dominant role of Howard Brown in their advertising. They give this lad rock all, no expense is spared, he gets the full monty and no mistake. Big production, exotic location ( probably S.Africa as usual) loads of CGI and a fucking submarine for God's sake, you can't get more commitment than that. Trouble is, I don't think Thomas is quite going to cut the mustard. He's perfectly amiable, he's got (gelled) hair, and he tries his best with the Hermans Hermits classic, but he still hasn't quite got that thing that Howard has.
So one has to say, nice try lads, but I think you're still lumbered with Howard. I have heard, through the grapevine that Howard has in fact become a bit of a nuisance. As the face of Halifax, he's understandably got a bit cocky, issuing increasingly outrageous demands, telling the board of directors how to run the company, all that sort of thing. If you look at the Halifax ads over the last few years you could see a lot of attempts to marginalise Howard, animation, bit parts, you name it they've tried it.
Unfortunately I suspect the focus groups keep saying `Where's Howard?' They've created a monster and they're stuck with him. He even has a small part in this latest extravaganza, linking himself, possibly unwisely, with another financially prominent person called Brown. The only advice I can give is, `Fuck the focus groups' and move on, if that's what you want to do, but I understand that in today's utterly weedy business environment that can be a tough call.

Or is he a bit of a nuisance?
