"What does this.."

Paperback writer.
Hoping to be one.

`Dude' It's just a word, but what a word. It has risen from relative obscurity to an almost universal prominence. The ad, quite reasonably works off the amazing number of ways it can be used in today's Anglo-American street patois. The guy uses dude in pretty much all the ways it can be, sympathetic, friendly, warning, surprised, understanding, appalled, the list goes on forever. All that is required is a very slight change in the inflection of the word. In that way, I am told that it's usage is similar to Chinese, which relies on an almost endless change of inflection on the same words to create a meaningful conversation.
The derivation of dude is slightly obscure, but the best bet is that it seems to come from German and Irish words which sound a bit like dud, and are used to denote someone who is a bit silly. It arrived in it's present form as a term that was used to describe someone who went out to the Wild West wearing over fashionable clothes, and was, quite understandably, given a right good razzing by the local cowboys.
I have to say that the commercial promises much, but doesn't quite deliver. I suspect that the guy they've cast isn't quite up to the nuances required in the delivery of the script. In simple terms, he might just not be a good enough actor.
This is a shame because it could be a wonderful commercial, picking up on the unspoken part of a previous Budweiser ad. `Whaassup' was a great hit, but even at the time one was left thinking that the full phrase would have been `Whaassup dude.' Anyway, economically, they've now made use of the other part of the phrase, but I'm not sure it will be as effective as their previous effort.
