The derivation of dude is slightly obscure, but the best bet is that it seems to come from German and Irish words which sound a bit like dud, and are used to denote someone who is a bit silly. It arrived in it's present form as a term that was used to describe someone who went out to the Wild West wearing over fashionable clothes, and was, quite understandably, given a right good razzing by the local cowboys.
I have to say that the commercial promises much, but doesn't quite deliver. I suspect that the guy they've cast isn't quite up to the nuances required in the delivery of the script. In simple terms, he might just not be a good enough actor.
This is a shame because it could be a wonderful commercial, picking up on the unspoken part of a previous Budweiser ad. `Whaassup' was a great hit, but even at the time one was left thinking that the full phrase would have been `Whaassup dude.' Anyway, economically, they've now made use of the other part of the phrase, but I'm not sure it will be as effective as their previous effort.
