I suppose it's the idea of linking chocolate and mistletoe that causes me to ponder.
Mistletoe is a parasitic plant whose link with kissing has somewhat unsavoury pagan origins. Its appearance is rather phallic, the arrangement of the leaves and berries has been seen as similar to the male genitalia, and the appearance of the fruit's content (viscin) is suggestive of semen. The ability to produce this sort of fecund stuff in the middle of winter obviously had a profound effect on our ancient ancestors, and we've been innocently snogging under the mistletoe ever since.
In addition mistletoe is quite probably toxic. Whilst it is used in Europe as an alternative therapy for certain types of cancer, the US Food and Drug Administration still remains unconvinced that it's benefits outweigh its risks. Birds can apparently eat the berries perfectly happily but humans can be laid low with diarrhoea and vomiting, which is not quite what you want at Christmas.
Whether Galaxy are aware of the dark history of mistletoe and its continuing toxicity, I do not know, but in a way I wish them luck, and hope that my observations will not prevent the innocent enjoyment of Galaxy Mistletoe Kisses this Christmas.
