Dr. Robert
he's always on the case

Stella Artois continues its series of charmingly off beat commercials. Quirky tales of French provincial life shot in a deliberately art house style, they seem a million miles away from the actuality of Stella in modern Britain. It is the leading session lager, drunk by millions and considered to be good value, it tastes OK and is reasonably strong. It is what fuels a large amount of the meyhem that erupts in our town centres every weekend.
Perhaps this is the very reason that Stella maintains a rather quaint and arty personality in it's TV commercials. Their message as it always has been, is that Stella is rather special and rather expensive, neither of which is true these days.
Maybe the ads should be seen, not so much as an attempt to sell the beer, but more as a fig leaf, or a distraction from the hideous reality of Stella consumption as it really is.
The usual beery clichés are studiously avoided, no laddish behaviour or obvious conviviality, nothing that might hint at the true nature of Stella usage and abusage. There was one on recently which featured a charming period tale of French priests ice skating. You just can't get further away from the actuality than that, and so I can only assume it is a deliberate, and so far successful ploy to keep the Government and it's associated do-gooders and busy bodies from interfering in the brewers legitimate business of selling intoxication to the nation.

Or a deliberate distraction?
